Hallamshire
Riding Society Dressage Secretary Annette Davis Green

I
organise and run the dressage competitions, demos and clinics for
the Hallamshire. I sometimes need to judge a
competition as well if we get a lot of entries and the booked judge
cannot cope with a full day!
Generally
speaking, unless someone has ran a competition themselves, they do
not appreciate the organisation and planning needed for a
competition. This needs to be started months in advance.
You need to pick the tests, book a venue, order the sheets, put
together an entry form, get lots printed, take to all local tack
shops, spend hours phoning round to book a judge, book a writer and
steward, receive entries, check (you'd be surprised how many people
cannot fill a form or cheque in properly!) and enter on
database, monitor number of entries so do not exceed maximum,
allocate times (bearing in mind all requests for riding late/early/I
want to ride with so and so), request and pick up rosettes, give out
dressage times, buy refreshments for the competition day and
check the judge is still coming!
At
the last competition in March, I gave entries the option of having
their dressage time texted to them instead of the normal process of
the person having to phone at a designated time. This
proved very popular and I spent 3 hours one evening sending text
messages for the 40+ entries!
On
the day I have to be up early (5am) to see to my horses then get to
the competition venue an hour before the start of the competition to
ensure everything is ready - lay out the arena, put up score board,
refreshments, meet the judge, writer and steward, allocate entry and
score sheets for each class to judge, ensure steward and writer know
what they have to do, collect test sheets as each test is completed
(in theory!), add up score, % and put on score board, allocate
placings at end of class and award rosettes, ensure scores and
placings are put on my database, replace arena boards after
competition, check venue is left tidy, give cheques to finance
director (!) and arrange for payment of venue, submit results of
competition to secretary for inclusion in newsletter and website.
I
occasionally judge unaffiliated dressage and showing classes for
other clubs.
I
ride affiliated dressage and my 6 year old horse (Reuben Res Gestae)
has qualified for the British Dressage Regional Championships at
Novice and Elementary. I have two other horses; Shadihm, who
is 28 and obviously retired! and Woodlander Rapido who is a
beautiful yearling colt.
